How much is a 1914 Indian $10 gold coin in G+/VG condition?
This is a 1oz .900 pure gold coin. A jeweler is going to quote me a price on Monday and I want to know what is a good buy price. Is a coin in this condition worth more than the gold bullion that is in it? If not, how would I calculate how much the coin is worth based strictly on gold bullion (current gold spot price is $914)?
At $914/oz, the gold in this coin would sell for roughly $440. A coin dealer would likely charge a buyer around $600 (or more if he thought he could get it) for a 1914 Eagle in VF condition; since this one's not as good, the price would be less, but still more than $440. If you're buying this as jewelry and you like the design or have some non-numismatic reason for buying it, keep those numbers in mind. Of course, if you're looking to make an addition to (or to start) a gold coin collection, you'd be wise to keep looking.
