I want to turn in my scrap gold. Is now a good time?
I have about 50 grams in weight on a postal scale of 10 and 14 karat. Is now a good time to turn in gold? Thanks guys.
The key is why you want to. Is it just sitting around collecting dust? If so, any time you decide to turn an unused asset into cash to do something useful with is a good time. If you've been sitting on it waiting for the price to go up, you missed your best chance to sell several months ago when it topped $1000. But now isn't a bad time to sell, either. Might it go higher? Yeah. But the downside is just as possible. Gold has been an excellent short-term investment and a lousy long-term one. Timing it tricky. Those that make the most money with gold are those that are constantly buying and selling, buying on the dips and selling on the upward spikes. Those that hold it don't do so well.
The price of gold hit an all-time high during the financial crisis-recession of 1980-81. Credit was real tight then, too. I remember that a 20% down payment was REQUIRED to buy a house and interest rates were 15% or higher. Gold went over $700. Adjusted for inflation, that 1980 house that went for 50K where I live is worth today, even in this market, 150K. And you had a place to live. 50K put into good growth mutual funds would be worth, even with this recent drop, five times or more that 50K. had you bought gold at $700 with your 50K, right now it would be worth around 65K. Adjusted for inflation, that $900 ounce of gold is worth $300 or so in 1981 dollars, but you paid $700.
I'd sell now if you have no use for the gold in its present form. Assuming you have half of it in 10K and half in 14K, that averages out to 12K or 50% pure gold, X 50 grams, or 25 grams of pure gold. A Troy ounce (how it is measured for market) is a fraction over 31 grams. You have roughly 3/4 Troy ounce of pure gold, or $675 spot market value. Expect a dealer to discount by 20-30% for refining cost and profit margin. I'd figure on being offered between $450 and $500. If you can use the money, take it.
How To Sell Scrap Copper
Ever dreamt of disposing that annoying pile of scrap copper lying around your home from a home remodeling project or even the replacement of a home gadget? Well of course you do, everyone does! Now, how about a little secret? How would you like getting rid of that hideous sight of scrap copper and earning some money?
It is definitely possible! While some of you might be aware of the existence of scrap copper selling, you might be at a lost of where to start. There are some tips you could follow regarding how you could sell scrap copper.
How to do it? Firstly, make sure you have your own means of transportation to transport your scrap copper. If you do not have one, engage for one, perhaps loaning one from a friend or a family member. Secondly, you should also pack your scrap copper in plastic garbage bags, barrels and even trashcans in a bid to gather all the scrap copper together in anything that makes it easier to carry.
Thirdly, immerse yourself in the yellow pages and check for a certified recycler. How to do it? To do so, look under “recycling” or “recycling” services to locate for one near your area for convenient transaction. Make a call and ask if they would be interested in buying your scrap copper. If they are, do not forget to make an enquiry about the price per pound they would pay you for your scrap copper. If you are fortunate enough to have more than one in your listings, do call and ask around to observe who is paying the most before settling down for the trade. Lastly, take your scrap copper to the recycler you have settled down on. Normally, they would request you to drive onto a scale. After relieving yourself of the scrap, you are to drive back on the scale and you are paid according to the difference in weight. On the other hand, some recyclers simply weight your containers with and without the copper.
In any of these ways, you are going to receive cold, hard cash or a cheque for your little effort. Now, wasn’t that easy? You are now a proud owner of a home free of hideous scrap copper and have earned money in the process!
